Canada declares new immigration benefits for international students

Sean Fraser revealed a new temporary policy that will allow international graduates to extend their stay in Canada. The temporary status of students may expire but this new policy will help them to extend their stay and continue to gain work experience and have a better chance at qualifying for permanent residency.

The Canadian government announced a new open work permit for international students in Canada whose post-graduation work permit expires between January and December 2022. They will qualify for an additional open work permit valid for up to 18 months.

IRCC emphasized that 95,000 PGWPs will expire in 2022. An estimation has also been made that a new work permit will benefit 50,000 PGWP holders.

Express Entry

The Express Entry draws will resume from July for Federal Skilled Workers, Federal Skilled Trades and Canadian Experience Class candidates. This will enable to fill millions of job vacancies in Canada.

With new rules, Express Entry is processed within six months period. As IRCC said, the current processing time of Express Entry can be in the range of seven months to 20 months.

Express Entry is Canada’s flagship point-based mechanism for those seeking to immigrate permanently. Candidates submit applications that enter a pool and are ranked, draws are held and candidates with the highest ranking points are invited to apply for permanent residence.

Permanent Residency Applications

Applicants who have applied for an open work permit have to wait for the processing of PR applications. Their work permit will be valid till the end of 2024. This will make sure all permanent residence applications are finalized before applicants need to apply to extend their temporary status.

Now, Applicants are no longer in Canada while their application is being processed.
